a slim world war i novel, jean echenozs 1914 (14 in its original french) tells the fates of five young frenchmen as theyre forced onto the front lines of the great war. while the narrative moves quickly - spanning the better part of two years - echenoz succinctly captures the essence and aftermath of bloody conflict. more a brief character study about wars effects on friends and family than a moralizing or philosophizing novel about the horrors of war, 1914 is stark yet spare - managing to portray the absurdity and indifference of battle in barely a hundred pages. while not the most compelling wwi work of fiction, it is, nonetheless, a moving, personal story of loss and the life that comes after.
all this has been described a thousand times, so perhaps its not worthwhile to linger any longer over that sordid, stinking opera. and perhaps theres not much point either in comparing the war to an opera, especially since no one cares a lot about opera, even if war is operatically grandiose, exaggerated, excessive, full of longueurs, makes a great deal of noise and is often, in the end, rather boring.
*translated from the french by linda coverdale (echenozs ravel, running, and lightning)

This was not, perhaps, the place to begin with Echenoz. It seemed that too much was crammed into just over 100 pages. The story tells of four men going off to WWI in what they believe will be a brief tour. There is not enough room to do them all justice until they meet their own ends of the war – either through death or disability. Plus pages are spent on the pregnant woman left behind. Undoubtedly, the horrors of the war are vividly pictured, as if in paintings. Chapter 12 spends six pages on “Animals, well, Anthime had seen a lot of them, of all sorts, during those five hundred days. Because although war prefers cities---besieging, invading, bombing, burning---it is waged in large part in the countryside as well, where beasts are simply a given.” Though I enjoyed this chapter, this is a novella in which long asides can take away from a taut story. Which I believe happened in this case.

I wanted to read a couple WWI books in keeping with the century old war, but think I may have done better with another of his books

Welcome to the twentieth century, humanity. Heres a horrible war.

I have no idea how Jean Echenoz sums up the horrors of WWI in just over 100 pages. I have no idea how he ruins the idealism of five young Frenchman, slaughtering them in the trenches, having them shot for desertion, disabling them, ruining their lives and the lives of those around them, and still emerges with such a beautiful book.

100 pages. 100. Or a hair over, 109 to be precise. But in that span we follow our five characters from mobilization to the brutal front and to the sad and caustic aftermath.

The book even admits it, hundreds of books have already been written, what can this contribute?

But contribute it does. It doesnt skimp on the horror of trench warfare, the bombs that splintred and severed actual human bodies, the blood and putrifaction. It doesnt avoid the French homeland, the war veterans limping sadly down the boulevards.

Christ! What a document, what a work of art. You may have read about this war before, but by all means, read this book.
